(Reuters) – The Senate Constitution and Justice Commission (CCJ) approved on Wednesday the appointment of lawyer Cristiano Zanin to the Federal Supreme Court (STF).

Approved by 21 votes to 5 in the CCJ, the name of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s nominee will still need to be submitted to a secret ballot in the Senate plenary.

Zanin advocated for Lula in the Lava Jato processes, but during the Saturday meeting he said that his proximity to the PT candidate is only due to the “quite frequent” relationship in the condition he had as his lawyer. He denied, at the same time, that he was best man at the president’s recent wedding.

The government’s expectation is that Zanin will receive between 50 and 60 votes from a total of 81 senators, including support from the opposition. At least 41 favorable votes are required to approve the nominee.
