LANSING, Mich. (Feb. 10, 2026) — Today, as the world observes Safer Internet Day, Michigan lawmakers are sounding the alarm about escalating online risks to children and pushing for new legislation to address them.
What are the specific dangers facing kids online? Increasing social media and Artificial Intelligence (AI) usage presents well-documented risks to young people, prompting a call for stronger protections.
“Our current laws are not stringent enough to adequately protect minors from incessant online dangers,” said Sen. Dayna Polehanki (D-Livonia), sponsor of the Leading Ethical AI Development (LEAD) for Kids Act. “That’s why I’m a proud champion of our Kids Over Clicks package that tackles this issue head-on — and I’m also proud to be hosting a virtual town hall later this month to spread even greater awareness and demonstrate why these bills are so critical for Michigan kids.”
In December, Senate Democrats introduced Senate Bills 757–760, aiming to create stronger safety measures to prevent technology companies from targeting and exploiting minors online. The legislation seeks to address the growing concerns surrounding data privacy, online harassment, and exposure to harmful content.
Safer Internet Day is an annual global campaign dedicated to fostering a more responsible and positive digital world, particularly for youth.
On Safer Internet Day, Senate Democrats are urging Michiganders to participate in the effort to create a safer digital environment for children and families. They emphasize that collective action is essential to protect young people online.
