Senate elections test the solidity of Nupes

The danger of division was already brandished on the sidelines of the discussions for the European elections of 2024, it is now at the mention of the senatorial elections. The alliance was however announced “historical”, according to the secretary general of the Socialist Party (PS), Pierre Jouvet. Its management, which had previously concluded an agreement with the French Communist Party (PCF), ended up joining forces with Europe Ecologie-Les Verts (EELV) at the beginning of July.

If the political future of the New Popular Ecological and Social Union (Nupes) remains shrouded in uncertainty, the outcome of the senatorial elections is much less so. With the exception of the 2011-2014 parenthesis, during which the Senate was predominantly on the left for the first time in its history, the triennial renewal of half of the Hemicycle was systematically carried out to the detriment of these political forces. “It’s not starting too badly for political parties whose primary objective is to keep seats”predicts Bruno Cautrès, researcher at the Cevipof laboratory at Sciences Po.

Do these internal wars augur a “premature end of the Nupes” ?, asks the political scientist. “The electorates are asking for unity. Burying the Nupes would be going too fast,” he advances. Rather, it seems to endorse a new stage in its existence, where the balance of power serves La France insoumise (LFI): “It’s a paradoxical unity: on the one hand, it doesn’t exist everywhere. On the other hand, its weaknesses reveal tensions within the left, particularly vis-à-vis La France insoumise. The history of the union of the left has never been a long calm river”, summarizes Bruno Cautrès.

“Moving up a gear”

This is the debacle announced for LFI, which is not represented in the Senate: “La France insoumise, like the party of Emmanuel Macron, are political organizations created only a few years ago. They have less local roots, elected officials in the departments [qui élisent les sénateurs], the last local elections were not really favorable to them. Inevitably this penalizes them for the senatoriales “explains the researcher.

The Socialists are delighted with the agreement reached, but bitterness prevails in the ranks of LFI. The movement’s headliner, Jean-Luc Mélenchon, fired back in a caustic blog post on July 26: “La Nupes is decomposing, and whose fault is it, guess? From Mélenchon, of course! (…) EELV and the PCF each designate a head of the European list and the PS declares that it will do the same. Whose fault is it ? Surprise: in Mélenchon, it goes without saying »taunts the triple candidate for the presidential election.
