Senator Lindsey Graham declares war over New York bill to require Chick-fil-A to operate on Sundays

Senator Lindsey Graham of South Carolina has made a bold declaration of “war” over a New York state bill that would require some Chick-fil-A restaurants to operate on Sundays. In a series of tweets, Graham vowed to introduce legislation that would withhold federal funds from cities that force the fast food chain to remain open on Sundays.

Graham criticized the bill, stating that the founders of Chick-fil-A made a decision to close on Sundays consistent with their faith, and any government attempt to reverse this decision goes against American values. He also praised Chick-fil-A as a great company and vowed that New York’s actions would not go unanswered.

The New York bill aims to have restaurants in state highway system rest areas operate for the entire week, bypassing Chick-fil-A’s long-standing policy of closing on Sundays to allow its employees to spend time with their families and worship if they choose.

The bill, introduced by State Rep. Tony Simone, aims to provide travelers in the Empire State with a diversity of food options, stating that if people want to eat fried chicken while traveling over the holidays, Chick-fil-A should be open on Sundays.

Restaurants already in operation would not be affected by the bill, but every future food concession contract at transportation facilities owned by New York State and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey would be impacted.

The controversy has ignited a fierce debate between supporters of religious freedom and advocates for consumer choice. It remains to be seen how the issue will unfold.
