Senator Graham Declares “War” Over New York Bill Mandating Sunday Operations for Some Chick-fil-A Restaurants

Senator Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) has sparked controversy with his declaration of “war” in response to a New York state bill that would require certain Chick-fil-A restaurants to operate on Sundays. Taking to Twitter, Graham wrote, “This is war,” and threatened to introduce legislation that would withhold federal funds from cities mandating the fast food chain to stay open on Sundays.

Graham argued that Chick-fil-A’s decision to close on Sundays is consistent with the founders’ faith and reflects American values. He praised the company for its quality product and treatment of employees, and warned that New York’s actions “will not go unanswered.”

The New York bill in question focuses on restaurants in state highway system rest areas, aiming to have them operate throughout the week. However, Chick-fil-A is well known for its policy of remaining closed on Sundays to allow employees to spend time with family and “worship if they choose.”

Under the bill, current restaurants would not be affected, but future food concessions at transportation facilities owned by New York state and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey would be impacted. State Rep. Tony Simone (D), who introduced the bill, argued that it is intended to provide travelers with diverse food options, especially during holidays.

Simone’s position is met with opposition from Senator Graham and others who support Chick-fil-A’s decision to stay closed on Sundays for religious reasons. The clash over the New York bill has quickly escalated, with the issue gaining national attention and sparking a debate over religious freedom and government mandates.
