Senegal’s industrialization is at the center of the development strategy presented on October 14 by President Bassirou Diomaye Faye. To this end, the new Senegalese authorities are increasing the number of special economic zones to attract investors. Two of these investors founded the first Senegalese agricultural implement factory in the Thiès region.

The Dakar authorities’ plan is to increase the number of special economic zones from 5 to 45. This will facilitate business access to land, one of the main obstacles to the country’s industrialization. Senegal. And allow investments to be redirected towards sectors other than services, hopes Bakary Séga Bathily, general director of the National Agency responsible for promoting investments and major works in Senegal. “ We have a structure of our economy based on services for over 50%, industry in second place and the primary sector at 17%, while the primary sector today mobilizes more than 60% of the population. “, explains.

Satisfying the needs of the primary sector is the strategy of the Senoutil company, recently established in Sandiara, a hundred kilometers south-east of Dakar. The factory will be the first to produce rakes, pruning knives, hoes and hoes on Senegalese soil. 500,000 tools in five years, hopes its general director, Ibrahima Gallo Ndao, in a region, in his opinion, promising, that of Thiès. “ It is a very well-known area in the horticulture sector, which exports almost everywhere. Therefore, it is important to create tools that fuel this value chain. But it is also a very dynamic sector in terms of careers. And that’s why we have all the construction tools in this range. »

You must export at least 50% of your production when you establish yourself in a Senegalese special economic zone. The constraints do not scare Ibrahima Gallo Ndao, but he hopes the new railway lines will help him achieve this goal. “ The ideal today is to have a line up to the border with Mali and another line up to the border with Mauritania. Not only does it open up opportunities, because industrial means exports, but it also facilitates connections between regions. »

Encourage professional training

Initially, the metal parts of the tools will be produced in France by its partner Saintex, led by the French-Senegalese Cheikh Sow. The latter awaits other reforms, which he believes are essential for the success of industrial projects like his. “ It is not so much the reform of the employment contract, it is above all the reform of professional training, this is where we expect significant reforms, confide. Accessibility, speed of processing of procedures, a policy more oriented towards professional training than university training. »

The goal of the special economic zones is to create 3 million jobs for young Senegalese.
