Senegal reiterates its support for the autonomy plan, “the appropriate framework” to resolve the question of the Moroccan Sahara

by times news cr

The advanced autonomy initiative proposed by Morocco aligns with our Delegation’s perspective, adhering to international law, the UN Charter, and the resolutions of the Security Council and the General Assembly.

We reiterate our‍ support for a final, just, lasting, and mutually acceptable political solution to the regional dispute over the Moroccan⁢ Sahara, through a process conducted exclusively under ⁢the auspices of the United Nations, in accordance with the resolutions adopted by the Security Council since 2007.

We urge all parties to embrace the‍ constructive⁤ dynamic fostered by the two round tables in Geneva, demonstrating realism ⁤and ‌a spirit of compromise ⁣to ensure the success of⁣ the political process initiated by the United Nations. We welcome the efforts undertaken by Staffan de⁤ Mistura, the ⁣UN SG’s Personal Envoy for the Sahara, to revitalize this political process since January 2022.

We encourage this inclusive approach and extend our best wishes for its ‍success.

Furthermore, ‍we⁤ acknowledge the progress made by Morocco in the southern⁢ provinces, particularly in promoting human rights and democracy, as well as the significant efforts to foster economic and social⁢ development in the Moroccan Sahara while empowering its populations. These advances‍ demonstrate Morocco’s ⁢commitment to resolving this regional dispute.

We also recall the opening of our Consulate General in Dakhla on April 5, 2021, as a testament to our‍ support for Morocco’s endeavors in this region.

We welcome the participation of representatives of the Moroccan Sahara elected during the Moroccan elections⁢ of September ⁣8, 2021, in the⁢ important meetings and discussions of the Committee of⁢ 24 (C24) and the regional seminars, including that for the Pacific. This participation is ⁢a positive⁤ signal that reinforces our optimism for a favorable resolution to this conflict.
