Sensory refuge opens at museum to foster inclusiveness – Health & Wellness

(ANSA) – TRIESTE, SEPTEMBER 10 – A silent, peaceful, protected space: starting today, a new museum area dedicated to sensory decompression is available at the Immaginario scientifico in Trieste within the exhibition itinerary. It is a refuge for those who, during a visit to a dynamic and socializing environment such as the science museum, may need a break to rebalance the senses. The initiative, presented today, is the result of the collaboration between Immaginario scientifico and the University of Trieste, with the contribution of Fondosviluppo Fvg.
The goal, it was explained, is to make the museum increasingly inclusive for all visitors, especially for people with sensory atypicalities, such as those on the autism spectrum, the elderly, or people with neurodegenerative disorders. The decompression space includes a special seat, covered in sound-absorbing material, known as the Alone-together seat.
The innovative piece of furniture was created as part of the European research project The sensitive house Senshome, led by Giuseppina Scavuzzo of the Department of Engineering and Architecture of the University of Trieste.
Originally designed for residential environments, the seat was then adapted for the museum context: it is designed to promote the sensory well-being of people with autism or other sensory and cognitive disabilities and can accommodate up to two people. The refuge area is completed by elements in sound-absorbent material that reduce noise, and two information panels, also in sound-absorbent material, which offer explanations on topics such as the perception of sound, sensory overload and sensory atypicalities, and the functioning of sound-absorbent and sound-insulating materials. The new space thus becomes, it has been observed, a tool for scientific dissemination, telling the public about the multidisciplinary research conducted by the University of Trieste, with particular attention to the importance of neurodiversity and sensory atypicalities.
