Seo Jung-hee said, “I grew up with a single mother. I was one of four children and lived in a one-room house with a well. There was a time when I asked my aunt in the U.S. to send me an invitation, so I prepared to immigrate. I submitted a letter of resignation in my third year of high school. Then, I was scouted on the street. I took a test and filmed a commercial for Haitai Confectionery the next day.”
She continued, “I filmed a commercial with Kang Seok-woo and Seo Se-won, but I was immediately scouted by Seo Se-won and had to come into the world without even being able to see the world. I signed a contract with Haitai Confectionery for less than a year. I was pregnant for eight months out of that year.”
He confessed, “I was a baby at the time. The only man I met in my life was Seo Se-won. I believed that was my first love. Now that I’m over 60 and have met my current boyfriend, I wonder if this is my first love.”
Seo Jeong-hee, who married Seo Se-won in 1982 and had one son and one daughter before divorcing after 32 years, said, “I thought I would have to live like this for 32 years. I didn’t even see him. I didn’t let him see me. He didn’t let me go out, so I couldn’t go out. I didn’t ask him about it myself, and I didn’t watch TV.”
She continued, “I blocked everything out. I went to learn how to cook with my secretary and just followed the set routine. I went all-in on my family. I looked after the kids. And when my husband got angry, I thought that I should be grateful and take good care of him since he was the one who left me in charge.”
He said, “I didn’t know how much I would get in trouble if I made eye contact with someone. I couldn’t look them in the eye. I would close my eyes when I got on the elevator. If I shook hands, I would be in big trouble. I always kept my hands behind my back. If I wore sleeveless clothes like today, I could have been locked up for three days and nights and not been able to come out.”
He continued, “It’s been a long time since I’ve been like that, but I got used to it, and at first I thought it was unfair. Because I lost time. I learned how to manage a household, I wrote, and I think there were many things that trained me.”
When asked, “When was the most difficult time in your life? How would you feel if your daughter lived like that?” Seo Jung-hee answered, “Of course not. When my daughter told me she was getting a divorce, I was against it at first, but a few days later, she said, ‘Live the life you want. You’re at an age where you can take responsibility for it. ‘ She supported me. When I look back, I know that the moon is bright when it rises, but I didn’t look at the moon. I thought I was happy living a life where I cleaned the remote control with a toothpick.”
