Professor Seo Kyung-deok of Sungshin Women’s University, who is known as ‘Korea Notifier’, said that she was quite shocked when the police came to her house because of a death threat. She also emphasized that she would take legal action if something like this happened in the future.

Professor Seo said on Facebook on the 22nd, “At around midnight on the 20th, the doorbell rang, I opened the front door, and three police officers came,” and “They said they came to check on my safety because there were death threats posted online.”

According to Professor Seo, a death threat was posted in the comments of a media article, and a netizen who saw it immediately reported it to the police. He said that the police have currently started an investigation into the person who posted the post.

Professor Seo explained, “Until now, Japanese right-wing forces and some Chinese netizens obsessed with Sinocentrism have been sending me death threats through my email and social media DMs (direct messages) for a long time,” adding, “This is because I have always been on the front lines responding justly against the distortion of history by Japan and China.”

However, he said, “It was quite a shock to me that something like this was posted in the public comment section of a domestic portal,” and “My family was also very shocked by this incident.”

Professor Seo stated that he will not overlook such incidents in the future and will respond strongly with legal measures. He also asked that anyone who finds comments or posts like this report them to him.

Professor Seo said on the 17th that someone was promoting Dokdo and the Rising Sun Flag using an account impersonating him. According to Professor Seo, the impersonating account that used his face to decorate its profile picture claimed, “Takeshima is Japanese territory” and “The Rising Sun Flag is a beautiful flag.” In the past, Japanese right-wing forces also created a Rising Sun Flag by photoshopping the faces of Professor Seo and his daughter.

It is not just Japan. Last September, when Professor Seo strongly criticized Baidu Encyclopedia, China’s largest portal, for distorting poet Yun Dong-ju and Dr. Ahn Jung-geun as “Joseonjok,” Chinese netizens left aggressive comments targeting Seo’s family on his social media.

Professor Seo became a famous person when he ran an ad titled “DOKDO IS KOREAN TERRITORY” in the July 25, 2005 New York Times to promote Korea to the world. After that, he introduced the Korean food “Bibimbap” through the MBC entertainment program “Infinite Challenge” and has continued to inform the world about issues such as Dokdo, the East Sea, and comfort women.
