Korean history lecturer Seol Min-seok shared his thoughts at the time of the thesis plagiarism controversy.

On the MBC show ‘Heart-pounding lecturers’ aired on the 19th, Seol Min-seok said, “I experienced the peak of hell the year I turned 52,” and talked about the plagiarism controversy at the time.

Seol Min-seok said, “It was the end of December 2020. I was working at the company when the CEO handed me his cell phone. It had my face on it, and the article was plagiarized from a thesis.” He added, “What do you think happens when someone goes through something so huge? My eyes went blank, I felt dazed, and I felt depressed.”

He continued, “I told the people who loved me that I felt like I couldn’t continue like this, so I thought I should step down,” and “I called the production team and the professors who wrote my thesis. I called my family to tell them that it was okay because I thought they would be surprised.”

Seol Min-seok said, “I bowed my head to my employees, apologized, and wrote a statement to announce my position.” He added, “I went home, reassured my family, and went to sleep, but when I woke up the next day, the whole world was white. I wished it was a dream.”

He added, “Whenever I went out to eat with my family, I felt like people were pointing fingers at me. It drove me crazy because I didn’t know if it was true or not,” and “The most common comment was ‘history maker.’”

Seol Min-seok re-enrolled in the Department of History Education at Yonsei University Graduate School of Education last year, where his master’s degree had been revoked, and is currently pursuing his master’s degree. He explained the reason he decided to study again despite the dissuasion of those around him, saying, “If I continue to ignore or run away, all the great figures in history that I have lectured on will become lies,” and “I thought that I should not live that kind of life, even if I am criticized as a fraud.”

Seol Min-seok, who was greatly loved as a Korean history lecturer, left the program he was appearing in in December 2020 when allegations of plagiarism were raised about his master’s thesis from Yonsei University’s Graduate School of Education, ‘A Study of Ideological Debates in the Descriptions of Modern and Contemporary Korean History Textbooks’ (2010).

Seol Min-seok apologized, saying, “I admit that I was lazy in my research while writing the paper and neglected to cite and footnote while referencing other papers.”Reporter Jo Yu-kyung, Donga.com, [email protected]
