The government has decided to conduct a full investigation of stores that are generating more than 500 million won in Onnuri gift certificate sales.

In a comprehensive audit of the National Assembly’s Trade, Industry, Energy, Small and Medium Venture Business Committee held on the 25th, Rep. Jang Cheol-min of the Democratic Party of Korea said, “The 1st to 3rd largest Onnuri gift certificate sales franchises were all vegetable stores in a market in Daegu.” “Only one is operated as a garlic store, and the other two are so-called ‘paper companies’ that do not have a registered address,” he pointed out. According to Rep. Jang, all three store owners are from the same family, and they exchanged Onnuri gift certificates worth an average of 19.2 billion won every month for cash.

Rep. Jang said, “The sales of paper Onnuri gift certificates raised by the first to third companies this year alone exceeded 100 billion won, and the garlic store (the only one among them in operation) generated sales of 6.3 billion won per month,” adding, “They are doing it as if they were money laundering.” He pointed out, “By creating this paper company, we illegally made transactions that did not exist.” Rep. Jang explained that the monthly sales of Onnuri gift certificates, including mobile, card, and branch, of the main branch of Seongsimdang, a famous bakery in Daejeon, are about 300 million won.

In response, Oh Young-joo, Minister of SMEs and Startups, said, “It appears that the three companies are clearly distributing (Onnuri gift certificates) illegally,” and added, “We will make efforts together with experts and with the help of the National Tax Service as soon as the government audit is completed.” Minister Oh then said, “We have begun a full-scale investigation targeting more than 15 stores that are generating more than 500 million won in Onnuri gift certificate sales.”
