The National Heritage Administration announced on the 13th that it has announced its intention to designate the ‘Seoul Heungcheonsa Wooden Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva Triad’ from the late Joseon Dynasty as a national cultural heritage treasure.

The ‘Seoul Heungcheonsa Wooden Avalokiteshvara Triad’ is a Buddhist statue whose creation date is clearly known (1701) through the creation inscription; its creators (including the monk sculptor Beopjam, Gyecho, Jinyeol, and Seongin); and its original enshrinement site (Jeokjoam, Sinheungsa Temple, Imsil).

It is not clear when the Avalokiteshvara Triad statues currently in the main room of Heungcheonsa Temple were moved from Jeokjoam Hermitage of Sinheungsa Temple in Imsil to Heungcheonsa Temple in Seoul.

There is a record that the statue of Avalokitesvara, the statue of Namsun Boy, and the statue of the Sea Dragon King in Daebang were repaired during the restoration of Heungcheonsa Temple in 1890, so it is believed that they were moved at least before that.

Although the monk sculptor Beopjam is not well known in the world of sculpture in the late Joseon Dynasty, Gyecho and Jinyeol, who participated in the creation of the statue together, are important monk sculptors in the world of sculpture in the 18th century.

The National Heritage Administration evaluated the statue, saying, “This Buddhist statue is a valuable resource for studying the formation and transmission of their sculptor lineage,” and “In particular, it has historical significance in that it is a work from 1701 and marks the beginning of 18th-century Buddhist sculpture.”

The relic is a very rare triad statue consisting of Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva, the main Buddha of Suwoldoryang, Namsun Boy, and the Sea Dragon King.

This composition was already seen in Goryeo Buddhist paintings, but it is believed that it became fully established after the 17th century.

In the ritual books compiled in the late and late Joseon Dynasty, Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva, Namsun Dongja, and Haesang Yongwang are mentioned as the Avalokitesvara Triad.

Because this Buddhist statue is from before its time, it is also an important resource for understanding the Avalokiteshvara Triad painting and beliefs that were popular before the publication of the ritual book.

The National Heritage Administration plans to designate the ‘Seoul Heungcheonsa Wooden Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva Triad’ as a national cultural heritage treasure after collecting and reviewing opinions from various circles during a 30-day notice period and deliberation by the Cultural Heritage Committee.
