The South Korean government urged its northern neighbors on Friday to agree to a discussion on future reunification, assuring that Seoul does not seek a transition to the ‘status quo’ by force, but early and peacefully.
The Minister of Unification, Kim Yung Ho, has approved the proposal of the President of South Korea, Yoon Suk Yeol, who a day before invited the leader of North Korea, Kim Jong Un, to discuss any issue in the interests of unification.
“I ask North Korea to accept,” suggested Kim, who assured that Seoul is open to discuss any issue, including the denuclearization of Pyongyang, humanitarian issues and prisoner exchanges.
“To achieve this, North Korea’s temporarily suspended communications and military lines must be resumed,” Kim said at a press conference, according to South Korean news agency Yonhap.
In this sense, Kim has confirmed that Seoul does not expect to achieve the reunification of the peninsula by force. “That is not the policy that the Government is following. We are looking for a peaceful and peaceful union, not through acceptance,” he noted.
The unification proposal consists of three stages, starting with achieving reconciliation and cooperation, as a preliminary step to the establishment of a single Korean government that culminates in a unified country. However, Minister Kim himself has admitted that the current first step is “very difficult.”
