Severe Cold Wave Grips Korea, Bringing Record Lows and Heavy Snowfall

A dangerous cold wave is sweeping across the Korean Peninsula, prompting warnings and advisories for much of the country. Residents are bracing for possibly record-breaking low temperatures and significant snowfall, notably along the west coast and on Jeju Island.

Why is this happening?

The current cold wave is due to a strong high-pressure system over Siberia bringing frigid air southward across the Korean Peninsula. This system is interacting with moisture-laden air from the West sea, resulting in heavy snowfall in coastal areas. The combination of these factors is creating extremely dangerous winter conditions.

Did you know? – Korea experiences cold waves annually, but this event is notable for its intensity and the potential to break temperature records in several regions. The Siberian high-pressure system is a key driver of these winter conditions.

Who is affected?

The entire Korean Peninsula is experiencing the effects of the cold wave, but the most severely impacted areas are northern Gyeonggi, Gangwon, northern Chungbuk, and northern Gyeongbuk provinces, which are under cold wave warnings.the central region,Jeonbuk, and Gyeongbuk are under a cold wave advisory. Residents of the west coast,Jeju Island,Ulleungdo, and Dokdo are facing the brunt of the heavy snowfall. Maritime traffic is also significantly affected.

What is the extent of the impact?

Temperatures are plummeting to record lows. Seoul is forecast to reach -13 degrees Celsius (-9 Fahrenheit) with a perceived temperature of -19 degrees Celsius (-2 Fahrenheit) tomorrow. Cheorwon is predicted to hit -17 degrees Celsius (1.4 Fahrenheit).Heavy snowfall is expected, with up to 10 centimeters (4 inches) in the Honam region and over 25 centimeters (10 inches) in mountainous areas of Jeju Island.Sea waves are reaching up to 4 meters (13 feet). These conditions pose a high risk of hypothermia, traffic accidents, and disruptions to daily life.

Pro tip – When temperatures drop this low, dress in layers, cover exposed skin, and limit time outdoors. Check local weather updates frequently and be prepared for travel delays or cancellations.

How did it end?

As of this report, the cold wave is ongoing and is expected to persist through the weekend. Forecasters predict temperatures around -10 degrees Celsius (14 Fahrenheit) will continue. While the intensity of the snowfall may lessen slightly, hazardous conditions are expected to remain. The cold wave is anticipated to gradually weaken early next week as the Siberian high-pressure system shifts eastward, allowing warmer air to move in. However, lingering cold temperatures and potential for further snowfall remain a possibility.

Authorities are urging extreme caution regarding traffic safety and maritime travel. according to weather caster Kang A-rang, the combination of the cold wave and prolonged snowfall will create challenging conditions for the west coast and Jeju Island.
