September 15, together with May 24, are the most important dates in the Bulgarian calendar. This was stated by Daniel Valchev, Dean of the Faculty of Law of the Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski”.

“It is the connection between who we were and our children. We remember the teachers, how we crossed the school threshold, how the bell rang. Then we send our children,” Valchev said.

According to him, people all over the world expect two things from a school – to give knowledge to children and to continue their education, which should have started in the family. However, according to him, modern educational systems are in crisis on both lines. “200 years ago the Fish Primer was published and it says what animals the crocodile and the rhinoceros are, today this question obviously does not stand, the role of the teacher has changed and instead of telling how long the Nile River is, because I can look it up and to understand everything, the role is different – to organize the knowledge and cause a tradition of critical thinking in children, so that they can distinguish what is true and what is not,” Valchev told bTV.

The other expectation of teachers is to fill in the deficits of parents. “This is an extremely large liability and it could once have been covered. The figure of the teacher is an extension of the figure of the parent. Unfortunately, at the moment the Bulgarian family itself is not in particularly good health, we are hesitant about what to allow and what not. This is transferred to the teacher – if a child does not respect his parents, neighbors, etc., he will not respect the teacher either,” Valchev added.

According to him, at one time it was said that you have to study to become a great person, but in the last 30 years, society has set another example – now you have to work hard to succeed.

On one of the most topical topics on the eve of the new school year – the law passed in the summer to ban gender propaganda in schools – Valchev believes that two questions are important – can we have a different opinion from Ursula von der Leyen and the Democratic Party of USA, and if we have, is different sexual orientation for us the norm or the exception. “For me, it’s more of an exception,” Valchev said.

However, according to him, children should know that differences should be respected and different people are also people with the same rights, with the same moral status.
