“Today, Australian Ambassador to Serbia Daniel Emery received an oral protest at the Serbian Foreign Ministry in connection with the ill-treatment suffered by the world’s best tennis player and Serbian citizen Novak Djokovic,” the Foreign Ministry’s website said.

Serbian Deputy Foreign Minister Nemanja Starovic told the Australian diplomat that he expects “personal efforts” from him so that Djokovic will be given the opportunity to await a court decision on being in Australia “in the conditions of accommodation corresponding to the athlete of his rank.”

We will remind, on the eve of Novak Djokovic arrived in Melbourne to participate in the tournament. After arriving in the country, the athlete was unable to pass passport control due to the lack of vaccination against COVID-19. Earlier, the tennis player said that he received a medical recusal from the coronavirus vaccination. However, the Australian authorities canceled his visa. The athlete is now being held in an immigration detention facility. Earlier, he had already appealed against the decision of the border services in court.
