The Secretary of the Security Council of Russia, Sergei Shoigu, arrived on an unannounced visit to Iran, Russian RT TV reported today.

Shoigu met with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and delivered a message from Russian leader Vladimir Putin, Iranian state TV IRIB reported. According to her information, the meeting took place in Tehran.

In addition to Putin’s message, the secretary of the Russian Security Council provided Pezeshkian with a “report on the agreements reached”, BTA writes.

Earlier, footage broadcast by RT on Telegram showed Shoigu holding a meeting with the secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, Ali Akbar Ahmadian.

The two countries discussed issues of bilateral cooperation, with special attention being paid to the position of the Islamic Republic regarding transport routes and corridors leading to Azerbaijan, TASS reported.

Reuters notes that Shoigu’s unannounced advance visit to Iran comes days after he met North Korean leader Kim Jong-un in Pyongyang.

Russia has deepened ties with Iran and North Korea, which are hostile to the US, since the start of its war in Ukraine. Washington claims both countries are supplying Russia with ballistic missiles to use in the conflict. Moscow denies these claims.
