Sergio García Sánchez (Guadix, 1967), one of the great emblems of the comic, drawing and illustration of Granada -and, of the whole world, everything is said-, has been awarded the National Prize for Illustration, corresponding to the year 2022 , at the proposal of the jury meeting this Tuesday. The prize, awarded by the Ministry of Culture and Sports, is endowed with 20,000 euros.

The jury highlighted that García “is an illustrator who expands the book format by taking graphic narration to other places and by multiplying the possibilities of illustration with images that narrate by themselves”.

In addition, the jury has pointed out that “it has its own unique language, as well as a technique with a linear richness that goes into infinity.” The Ministry of Culture and Sports grants this prize with the aim of recognizing and distinguishing all the work carried out by a Spanish illustrator in the field of books and letters in any of the Spanish languages.

Sergio García studied Fine Arts at the University of Granada, where he is currently a full professor in the Drawing Department. His professional activity focuses on editorial illustration, comics and children’s illustration. He has worked for The New Yorker, The New York Times, Toon Books, Dargaud, Delcourt, Dibbuks, Ediciones Santillana, Ediciones SM, among others. He has been awarded the ÑH, APIM, Society of Illustrators, American Illustration, School Library Journal, Kirkus, Festival Internacional de Bande Dessinnée de Sierre & CBBD-Centre Belge de la Bande Déssinne awards.

He has participated in exhibitions in Paris and Angoulême (France), New York City, Brussels, Frankfurt, Geneva and Barcelona.

The jury, chaired by María José Gálvez Salvador, General Director of Books and Reading Promotion of the Ministry of Culture and Sports, was made up of Daniel Torrent Riba, appointed by the Professional Association of Illustrators of Catalonia; Nuria Tamarit Castro, for the Professional Association of Illustrators of Valencia; Marina Hernández Ávila, for the Professional Association of Illustrators of Madrid; José Tomás Díaz Teijo, for the Galician Association of Illustration Professionals; Josune Urrutia Asua, by the Professional Association of Illustrators of Euskadi; José Antonio Tàssies Penella, for the Federation of Associations of Professional Illustrators (FADIP); Genoveva Tusell García, by the Center for Gender Studies of the UNED; Blanca Muñoz Gonzalo, by the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando; Karla Fernández de Gamboa Vázquez, for the Spanish Organization for Children’s Books (OEPLI) and Carme Solé Vendrell, for the Ministry of Culture and Sports.
