Juventus Turin still sees the road to the next Champions League become more complicated after having received a penalty of 10 points, certainly reduced from the initial 15 points, for accounting fraud, but very handicapping for the Old Lady.

This new sanction, pronounced Monday by the Court of Appeal of the Italian Football Federation, brutally pushed Juventus from 2nd to 7th place in Serie A, five points from the last qualifying place for the Champions League occupied. by AC Milan (4th).

Beaten 4-1 in Empoli on Monday evening, the Bianconeri, who receive the Rossoneri on Sunday, see their hopes of finishing in the Top 4 and playing in the Champions League (a competition they have been playing continuously since 2012) dwindling.

The court was a little more lenient than the request of the federal prosecutor, who had requested Monday morning 11 withdrawal points during the hearing to review this penalty.

This same federal court of appeal had inflicted in January a withdrawal of 15 points to Juve because of capital gains deemed artificial during the sale of players. But she was called to reassess her sanction in April by the Guarantee College of the Italian Olympic Committee (Coni).

This college, the highest level of sports justice in Italy, had confirmed a “voluntary and repeated alteration of accounting entries” on the part of Juve. But he had suspended the sanction by asking that the responsibilities of certain Turin leaders be clarified, including former vice-president Pavel Nedved. The latter was finally acquitted on Monday.

The suspension of the main confirmed leaders

The suspension of the other main leaders and ex-leaders had been confirmed in April: two and a half years of suspension for the ex-sporting director Fabio Paratici, today at Tottenham; two years for ex-president Andrea Agnelli or sixteen months for the current sporting director, Federico Cherubini.

Juve risk another sanction, a withdrawal of points or a fine, in another separate procedure, concerning a different alleged accounting irregularity: having deferred payment of their players’ salaries during the Covid-19 pandemic to reduce their losses, without refer to sports authorities.

In addition to these procedures in Italy, Juve is also the subject of a UEFA investigation into possible “alleged financial violations”. The club is under close surveillance by the European body with which it concluded a three-year recovery plan last summer to respect financial fair play.
