The echoes of Matanzas’ coronation in the II Elite League can still be heard, when Cuban baseball is already getting ready for its next chapter. The new Star Series, announced at the last minute last weekend, will become a reality starting this Sunday at the Victoria de Girón stadium in Yumur.

The event took shape overnight and in just a few days the format, calendar, participating foreign teams came to light, as well as the roster of the group of players from all over the country who will accompany the champion Crocodiles representing the patio.

As for the foreign guests, the authorities of the Cuban Federation (FCB) confirmed that a Sub 23 team will participate for Venezuela, while Mexico will participate with a senior team made up of figures who participated in the Central Caribbean games in San Salvador and the Pan American Games in Santiago de Chile.

For its part, the “Estrellas” team will be led by Yuliesky Gónzalez, brand new sub-headliner of the Elite League with the inspired Cazadores de Artemisa, a ninth that will contribute a good part of its members. But there are also many other names from the rest of the provinces that shined in the second edition of the recently completed contest and make the list gain strength in all its lines.

Only between the Matanzas team, whose power is already known with 18 home runs in the postseason, and this new selection, it can be said that the best of the baseball currently played in Cuba will come together.

As if that were not enough, the hosts announced the day before the incorporation of a luxury reinforcement such as Yadir Drake, who will seek to get rid of the “thorn” of not having been able to play in the postseason. The Matanzas international himself, a member of Cuba at the V World Classic, asked the FCB for authorization to play with the team from his native province.

In addition to the competition between the four protagonists, the contest will be opened by a Little League exhibition game between teams from Matanzas and Artemisa, and will also feature a Home Run Derby with the main hitters from each squad that promises to be quite a spectacle.

With the materialization of this hasty but novel tournament, the Cuban baseball authorities have an ace up their sleeve to take advantage of the effervescence left by the Elite League final, and at the same time try to make up for Cuba’s absence from the Caribbean Series or other international competition.

In this sense, national commissioner Juan Reinaldo Pérez declared a few days ago that they are in negotiations to attend the Antillean Cup in Puerto Rico, next February.
