An important group of protesters has staged a violent confrontation with Peruvians residing in the area of the border of this country with Chile. Most would be Venezuelan migrants trying to return to their country.
The Chilean outlet Meganoticias has published a video in which people can be seen throwing stones. The images show police officers helping a person who was lying on the ground after receiving an impact.
Meanwhile, on the Peruvian side, the police have formed a line with riot shields to prevent the entry into the country of migrants, who were stranded at the border after leaving Chilean territory 16 days ago.
The conflict has its origin in an action by migrants, who blocked the Panamericana Sur highway to demand that the authorities allow them to enter Peruvian territory to continue their journey to their country of origin.
The Peruvian radio station RPP has published a video in which the migrants are seen sitting on the road while others formed a cordon and placed their luggage and bags full of waste on the track to avoid traffic.
The blockade installed near the Santa Rosa border complex lasted several minutes and caused a vehicle hold. When the Police intervened to clear the road, some of the migrants began to insult and throw stones at the agents, who managed to drive them back to Chilean territory; for which reason members of the carabineros also had to intervene.
The Peruvian Army has sent troops to the area, but for the moment it has not had to intervene and remains one kilometer from the place.
