Security experts have discovered four vulnerabilities in the WebOS for LG televisions. There is a workaround to prevent hackers from breaking into the TV’s software.

Four security holes have been discovered in LG televisions with the WebOS operating system. This is what the cybersecurity experts at Bitdefender say. It is said that criminals could gain access to the device via the vulnerabilities.

Among other things, the hackers were able to use a vulnerability to add an additional user to the TV set.

Using another security hole, the attackers could then give the new user root rights (administrator rights) in order to then gain complete control over WebOS and thus over the television.

This allows the attackers to steal access data from streaming services such as Netflix or Disney+ stored on the television.

These are the operating systems and televisions identified as vulnerable by “Bitdefender” security experts:

  • webOS 4.9.7 – 5.30.40 runs on LG43UM7000PLA
  • webOS 5.5.0 – 04.50.51 runs on OLED55CXPUA
  • webOS 6.3.3-442 (kisscurl-kinglake) – 03.36.50 runs on OLED48C1PUB
  • webOS 7.3.1-43 (mullet-mebin) – 03.33.85 runs on OLED55A23LA

According to its own information, “Bitdefender” submitted the vulnerabilities to LG in November 2023. A patch from the TV manufacturer was released on March 22, 2024. Owners of the devices mentioned above should check whether WebOS is up to date.

  1. Turn on your LG TV and press the “Settings” button on your remote control. A gear symbol is shown on the button.
  2. Select “Software Update” under the “Customer Support” or “General” menu item.
  3. Select “Check for Updates” under “Software Update”
  4. Follow the instructions on the TV to update WebOS.
  5. Complete.
