SESCO, “Beware of Bedbugs When Traveling Abroad During Chuseok Holidays”

by times news cr
SESCO has urged people to be careful of bedbugs when traveling abroad during the Chuseok holiday. SESCO is conducting a ‘Public-Private Joint Campaign to Block Overseas Bedbug Inflow’ with the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency, and Incheon International Airport Corporation at Incheon International Airport with the nation’s first bedbug detection dog until September 8.

Bedbugs are highly correlated with the number of people entering and leaving the country

Comprehensive environmental sanitation company SESCO (CEO Jeon Chan-hyeok) urged caution against bedbugs ahead of the Chuseok holiday.

This Chuseok holiday is from the 14th to the 18th, and if you add two days of annual leave to the end of the holiday, you can rest for nine days including the weekend. Based on analysis of bedbug monitoring, SESCO has asked overseas travelers to be especially careful as the influx of bedbug may increase due to an increase in overseas travelers during the Chuseok holiday, which could last up to nine days.

According to the analysis of the ‘Bed Bug Monitoring Index and the Number of Domestic and International Entrants’ conducted by the SESCO Science Research Institute since 2010, the increase in bed bugs is highly correlated with the number of domestic and international travelers. In fact, the number of domestic and international travelers decreased from 2020 to 2021 due to COVID-19, and the increase in the bed bug monitoring index slowed down. However, since the lifting of international travel restrictions in 2022, the number of domestic and international travelers and the bed bug monitoring data index have been increasing together.

Bed bugs take more than two months to grow from eggs to adults, and can survive for 18 months without eating after becoming adults. Bed bugs, which are widely spread through bags and clothing, cause severe itching, blisters, hives, high fever, and anemia. During their lifetime, one female lays more than 200 to 500 eggs, which reproduce into about 300 adults after 90 days.

Due to the risk of bedbugs, the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency is strengthening its promotion of bedbug prevention rules, such as checking for bedbugs in crevices between furniture such as beds and in areas that touch walls when visiting accommodations while traveling abroad, checking for bedbugs in luggage in a separate space after traveling, and washing at high temperatures above 45 degrees and drying for more than 30 minutes.

Considering the characteristics of bedbugs that require preemptive response, SESCO has been operating a bedbug control center at Incheon International Airport Terminal 2 since August 9th in cooperation with the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency, etc. to conduct a public-private joint bedbug prevention campaign to block overseas inflow.

The bedbug control center has deployed a dedicated bedbug control team of about 10 experts with over 10 years of experience in pest control, along with the first bedbug detection dog in Korea, and provides free bedbug detection and blocking services.

After the Incheon Airport Bed Bug Control Center opens until the 8th, SESCO will provide comprehensive bed bug control solutions by operating physical control systems such as bed bug diagnosis, monitoring, advanced bed bug control steam guns, ultra-precision microscopes, and special bed bug control hot air chambers, in addition to preemptive response using bed bug detection dogs.

A SESCO official said, “Bedbugs have high survival and reproductive capacities, so their population can increase exponentially in a short period of time,” and added, “If you suspect bedbugs, you need to get rid of them quickly by seeking the help of an expert.” He added, “We will do our best to prevent the spread of bedbugs nationwide.”
