TDespite the current economic challenges in Austria, the food group SPAR wants to build and open seven new stores in Lower Austria. Regional companies will be given priority in terms of construction and product range, it says.

In August, the food company will open two new branches in Hennersdorf and Pressbaum. By the end of the year, further SPAR stores will follow in St. Pölten, Zwettl, Mank, Mauerbach and Groß-Siegharts. In total, almost 150 jobs will be created in these Lower Austrian communities and towns.

“In many regions, a new grocery store is simply a welcome local supplier. In some areas, however, a new supermarket also provides impetus and paves the way for the establishment of other businesses and sometimes a new SPAR is also a sign of new thinking. The SPAR supermarket on Mariazeller Strasse in St. Pölten, for example, will be housed in a multi-use building, thus underlining the innovative and sustainable path of the city of St. Pölten,” said SPAR managing director Alois Huber in a press release.

Priority for regional craft businesses

Local companies are not only to have priority when it comes to the product range – regional construction companies and tradesmen are also to be given preference for the nine new SPAR projects. For example, the new SPAR building in Zwettl is being built by the local construction company Fessl – and Lagerhaus Zwettl has been commissioned to carry out the plumbing and electrical installations. The investment volume for the seven new SPAR stores in Lower Austria is around 35 million euros.
