Seven people died Friday in southern Chile after the small plane they were travelling in crashed in the morning, the General Directorate of Civil Aeronautics (DGAC) reported in a statement.

The DGAC had lost communication with the Piper Navajo aircraft at 09:13 local time (13:13 GMT), a few minutes after it took off from the Coyhaique airfield, some 1,700 kilometres south of Chile.

The DGAC statement said that both the pilot and the six occupants died, without mentioning the cause of the accident.

The presidential delegate for the region, Rodrigo Araya, said he had instructed the prosecutor’s office and the Legal Medical Service to begin an investigation into the incident.

“Now comes the investigation stage to determine the causes of what happened,” Araya told reporters.

There is still no confirmation as to when the bodies of the victims will be removed, due to the difficult weather conditions in the area.

“A bad weather front is coming, with snow (…) it could take a couple of days, three days perhaps in this area,” explained Army General Mario Sepúlveda.
