Seven rafters, presumably of Cuban origin, were involved in a journey that captured the attention of the authorities and the community of the Cayman Islands.

It was the morning of Wednesday, May 8, when the fate of these people crossed with that of this British territory, located south of Cuba, according to sources from the Customs and Border Control Service of the Cayman Islands (CBC).

It was reported that the seven rafters were seen in a homemade boat off Queens Highway, around 5:30 in the morning.

The security agency stated that the travelers decided not to make a prolonged stop in the Cayman Islands, but rather to continue on in their rustic boat.

“At approximately 9:30 am the vessel was heading WNW off the coast of Cobalt, West Bay, approximately 2 miles offshore,” reported the CBC, marking the course of these individuals out of the line of sight of the authorities, who from the ground monitored them until they were out of sight.

This chapter adds to the history of Cuban rafters who, moved by desperation and the desire for freedom, take to the sea in search of a better life for themselves and their families who remain hostages on the communist island.

In January, the arrest of another group of six Cuban rafters made up of five men and one woman was reported, all of them aboard a ship manufactured, surely, by themselves.

By then, it was learned that they were intercepted by agents from the Cayman Islands Customs and Border Control Service on Sunday, January 14 at 12:30 midnight.

Although many are aware of the danger that the trip represents, hunger, lack of medicine, and more, pushes them to make it without looking back.
