The Israel and the Hamas reached an agreement on a cease-fire in Gaza, lasting at least four days, in order for a humanitarian aid in the blockaded Palestinian enclave and to release at least 50 hostages held there.

As part of the deal, they will also be released at least 150 Palestinians held in Israeli prisons.

October 7: Hamas gunmen launched a surprise attack in southern Israel. The Israeli government announced that 1,200 people, mostly civilians, lost their liveswhile another 240 were arrested, during the armed attack.

The military commander of Hamas Mohammad Daif announced to Hamas media that the attack had begun and called on Palestinians everywhere to fight.

The Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced that Israel is at “war”, declaring the start of retaliatory airstrikes against Gaza run by Hamas, as well as a complete siege of the narrow coastal enclave between Israel and Egypt.

October 13: Israel called on residents of Gaza City, home to more than 1 million of the Strip’s 2.3 million residents, to evacuate the city and move south.

Gaza remains under siege and residents report having nowhere to go following the shelling of southern parts of the Strip.

October 17: Explosion at the hospital Al Ahli Al Arabi Baptist in Gaza City with casualties is causing outrage in the Arab world. The Palestinians attributed the explosion to an Israeli airstrike. Israel said the explosion was caused by a Palestinian rocket.

The Gaza Ministry of Health announced that 471 people were killed by the explosion. Israel disputed the number of casualties, while an unclassified US intelligence report estimated the death toll at between 100 and 300.

October 18: The president of the USA Joe Biden visited her Middle East to show support for Israel and prevent a wider regional conflict.

He attributed the blast at the hospital to a misguided rocket fired by Gaza militants. Arab leaders hit back, blaming Israel while canceling a summit with Biden in Jordan.

October 20: Hamas released two American hostages, Judith Tai Ranan, 59, and her daughter Natalie, 17. The women had been kidnapped from a kibbutz in southern Israel.

October 21: Trucks were allowed to pass with help from the border guard passage of Rafa from Egypt to Gaza after days of diplomatic wrangling.

Aid was delivered to Gaza, minimal compared to the dwindling needs for food, water, medicine and fuel.

October 23: Hamas released two other hostages, two elderly Israeli women, “for humanitarian reasons and for reasons of poor health.”

The two women had been kidnapped by kibbutz in southern Israel along with their spouses, who are still being held by Hamas. As she was freed, one of the hostages shook the gunman’s hand, saying “shalom” (peace).

October 26: Israeli forces launched their biggest raid yet on Gaza, with tanks and infantry hitting infrastructure and anti-tank missile sites.

October 27: Israel’s chief military spokesman announced that Israeli ground forces are expanding their operations inside Gaza, signaling the start of a ground offensive.

October 28: Netanyahu announced that Israeli forces launched the second phase of the warstressing that Israel will “destroy the enemy above and below the ground.” He called on Israelis to expect a “long and hard” military campaign.

October 31: Israeli airstrikes hit the densely populated refugee camp Jabalia of Gaza.

Israel announced that it killed commander of Hamas. Palestinian health officials reported that the strike killed around 50 people and injured 150.

November 1: The exodus from Gaza through the Rafah crossing began for approx 7,000 foreign passport holdersdual nationals and their dependents, as well as people in need of urgent medical care.

November 6: The UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres stated that Gaza is turning into “children’s cemeteryand asked for a ceasefire.

Palestinian health authorities announced that the death toll from Israeli strikes had exceeded 10.000.

November 13: Israeli tanks stormed the hospital Al Shifa of Gaza City, where approximately 650 patients were still present.

Israel announced that the hospital is located on top of tunnels that housed them Hamas headquarterswhich used the patients as shields, which Hamas denied.

November 15: Israeli special forces entered Al Shifa Hospital and searched the site, which covers more than 20 acres, with patients still inside.

They initially revealed a small collection of weapons, but in the following days announced that they had located a concrete-walled tunnel entrance and presented footage of a 55-metre section of it, which they said was ten meters underground.

The two sides exchanged accusations of war crimeswith the Palestinians blaming the Israel for targeting civilians and Israel to say that Hamas uses civilians as human shields.

November 21: Israel and Hamas announce agreement on four-day cessation of hostilities.

Netanyahu’s office said they would be released 50 women and children and that the moratorium would be extended by one more day for each additional 10 hostages released.

Hamas announced that the 50 hostages to be released in exchange for 150 Palestinian women and children, held in Israel, and that humanitarian and medical aid, as well as fuel, will be allowed into Gaza.

Gaza’s health ministry, which is controlled by Hamas, announced that at least 13,300 Palestinians have been killedincluding at least 5,600 childrensince the beginning of the war.
