Several Four-Cylinder Cars Surpass Ford Mustang EcoBoost in Horsepower

The 2026 Mustang EcoBoost delivers 315 horsepower, a figure that matches the 2010 V8-powered Mustang GT but falls behind several modern four-cylinder competitors. While the turbocharged 2.3-liter engine serves as the base option for the Ford lineup, various manufacturers have developed high-output four-cylinder powertrains that exceed this output.

Four-cylinder engines exceeding Mustang output

Several vehicles utilize four-cylinder configurations to achieve higher performance metrics than the standard Mustang EcoBoost. To illustrate this, we have selected five different four-cylinder models with higher horsepower ratings than the Mustang, ranging from sport sedans and hot hatchbacks to a crossover SUV:

  • Porsche 718 Cayman S and Boxster S: 350 horsepower
  • Cadillac CT4-V: 325 horsepower
  • Toyota RAV4 Plug-In Hybrid: 324 horsepower
  • Acura Integra Type S: 320 horsepower
  • Honda Civic Type R: 315 horsepower (ties the Mustang)

The RAV4 PHEV's configuration shows that hybrid electrification can provide a transformation as significant as adding a turbocharger to a four-cylinder engine.

Mustang EcoBoost Convertible Premium pricing compares to competitors

The 2025 Mustang EcoBoost Convertible Premium starts at $44,640, which includes a $1,595 destination fee. A vehicle equipped with $7,265 in optional extras reaches a final price of $51,905.

Technical specifications and equipment options

The standard 2.3-liter inline-4 engine in the Mustang produces 310 horsepower and 350 pound-feet of torque, while the base model 2026 Mustang EcoBoost is rated at 315 horsepower. This engine sends power to the rear wheels via a standard 10-speed automatic transmission. Ford indicates the EcoBoost convertible weighs 3,741 pounds, and testing by Edmunds showed a 0-to-60 mph time of 5.4 seconds.

Buyers can upgrade the vehicle with several equipment packages. According to Yahoo, the $3,000 Equipment Group 201A adds leather seats, a curved display, aluminum pedals, a memory driver’s seat, heated mirrors, and a heated leather-wrapped steering wheel. Other available options include:

  • $1,450 20-inch aluminum wheels
  • $1,225 active performance exhaust
  • $995 12-speaker B&O sound system
  • $395 Grabber Blue Metallic paint
  • $200 premium floor liners

Fuel economy and driver assistance

EPA ratings for the vehicle are 22 mpg in the city, 33 mpg on the highway, and 26 mpg combined.

The vehicle also incorporates physical controls to assist with technology. Chunky buttons on the steering wheel allow for the operation of the stereo and ADAS features.
