They threaten to debit several hundred euros from the PayPal account!

Currently, fraudulent calls are increasing, in which a computer voice indicates that the online payment service PayPal is calling. Alleged reason: Payments were initiated from the called party’s Paypal account. If you want to stop them, you have to press a button and stay on the phone.

The Baden-Württemberg consumer advice center provides information about this new scam. It works according to a similar pattern to a scam from last year, in which a computer voice pretends to be Europol, Interpol or the Federal Criminal Police Office. The goal: the victim’s account details or the transfer of money.

Again, this is a scam and the call is not from PayPal.

And: All those affected who have reported to the consumer advice center so far have not been able to understand any debits via Paypal, as threatened in the call.

What should I do if I get a call like this?

Just hang up!

The aim of the scammers is for you to stay on the phone and reveal personal data or even transfer money. Paypal itself usually does not call its own customers. “And certainly not with the request to make payments,” as a PayPal spokeswoman explains.

You can also check your own Paypal account to see whether the threatened payments are actually due there. If you are not sure: Contact real PayPal customer service.
