“Over 1,037 Killed in 6.8 Magnitude Earthquake in Morocco’s Atlas Mountains”

In a devastating event, a severe 6.8 magnitude earthquake struck the Atlas Mountains in Morocco, resulting in the tragic deaths of over 1,037 people. The earthquake, which occurred between Friday and Saturday, also left at least 672 people injured, with 205 in serious condition.

Efforts to search and rescue survivors are currently underway, but the magnitude of the destruction has made the task more complicated. Caroline Holt, of the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent, stated that a massive relief effort would be needed to cope with the aftermath of the earthquake.

The historical buildings in the old city of Marrakesh, declared a world heritage site by UNESCO, were severely affected. Buildings collapsed, walls cracked, and fragments of collapsed walls scattered throughout the alleys. The renowned Koutoubia Mosque, dating back to the 12th century, also suffered damage. Its 68-meter-tall spire survived, but the extent of the damage is still unknown.

Amid the chaos, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs managed to contact 402 Israelis staying in Marrakesh. However, there are still 17 Israelis with whom no contact has been established. It is believed that their observance of Shabbat may have contributed to the lack of communication.

Eyewitnesses described scenes of panic and chaos as people ran through the streets in fear. Many sought refuge in open areas due to the fear of consecutive earthquakes and potential building collapses. Some residents reported cracks on the walls of the old city, adding to their fear of returning home.

Tourists were also caught up in the earthquake, with Yossi Azoulai, a tourist guide who recently relocated to Morocco, sharing his experience of sleeping in his car along with the city’s residents. The lack of air conditioning in houses prompted many to seek shelter outdoors.

Rescue and travel insurance companies have been mobilizing to assist Israelis affected by the earthquake. Harel Insurance and Finance Group reported receiving over 70 inquiries from policyholders in the Marrakesh area, while Partner and Pelephone announced benefits for their customers staying in Morocco.

PassportCard, an insurance company, arranged for a plane to bring back its policyholders from Morocco. The company’s CEO, Ronit Segal, emphasized their commitment to providing immediate aid and safe transportation for their policyholders.

As the rescue and relief efforts continue, the coming days will be critical in ensuring the survival and well-being of those affected by the earthquake. The damage caused by the earthquake, coupled with the loss of life and injuries, has left the region in a state of shock and mourning. The international community stands ready to support Morocco in its recovery efforts during this difficult time.
