Severe drought for fourth year; Somalia battles hunger as it braces for famine during a prolonged drought

by time news

A country facing death and starving for the fourth consecutive year due to drought is begging for mercy from the whole world. As we mark 2022, Somalia has few words to say. Food shortages, malnutrition and starvation. When 2022 recedes, the world is thinking whether it will be able to reach the Sun with the speed of science. But in the other part of the globe, many people are fighting death due to sunstroke. This is the fourth year of drought in Somalia. All livelihoods were destroyed.

Cultivation depended on the rainy season ‘gu’, which starts in late March or early April and lasts until June, and the rainy season ‘dair’, which falls in October and November. Agriculture is in crisis as the rains stopped for the fourth year in a row. The fields have dried up. Cattle were the main source of livelihood and died as the drought worsened. The UN warns that the country is heading for extreme famine. This is the worst drought in 40 years.

According to UN figures, Somalia has not yet reached the fifth stage of the famine index, but severe food shortages and malnutrition have made Somalia a disaster area. High grain prices and years of drought are taking their toll on the Somali people. In 2011, about 250,000 people died in Somalia due to drought. When the closest ones and those who should be protected die, those who are left take their lives in their hands and move to the camps en masse. Their hope is that a number of good people and indigenous groups, whose humanity has not died, will bring food to the camp.
