Heavy rain and hail hit the popular Austrian seaside resort of Lignano Sabbiadoro in the province of Udine on Monday evening. This caused problems for vacationers and some damage. The weather conditions deteriorated sharply in the late afternoon when a severe thunderstorm struck the Friulian coastal town. Many beachgoers had to flee the beach, media reported.

Those who remained were urged by rescue teams to clear the beach. Red warning flags were raised. The fire department and local civil protection dealt with flooding in several basements and some fallen trees. Several cars were damaged.

Man Missing

Meanwhile, a search is underway for a 63-year-old man from Udine, who has been missing in Lignano since Monday afternoon. The man was on a boat with his wife when he jumped into the water to swim.
