Severe Thunderstorm Watch: Yellow Alert for Strong-to-Severe Thunderstorms and Tornado Threat in our Area

Severe Thunderstorm Watch Issued for Our Area Until Midnight

It’s another steamy and stormy Saturday as a Severe Thunderstorm Watch has been issued for most of our area until midnight. The watch comes as part of the Yellow Alert that has been enacted due to the threat of strong-to-severe thunderstorms that may occur from now through the overnight hours into early Sunday morning.

So far, most of the thunderstorms in our area have been sub-severe. However, we can expect the showers and storms to come in waves, with one little wave moving through now and subsequent rounds expected after 6 p.m. The strongest wave looks to approach by the midnight hour.

With these storms, we can expect hazards such as damaging winds, hail, heavy downpours, and even a tornado or two. Damaging winds appear to be the greatest threat associated with today’s storms. In fact, a Tornado Watch has been issued for Sullivan County until 9 p.m., which may be extended farther east later.

This year has already seen numerous tornadoes touch down across our area, with New Jersey being hit particularly hard. Given the very humid airmass in place, flash flooding can also occur with any of these storms. Areas to the north and west of the city have the highest chance of experiencing any of these hazards.

For tonight, expect lows ranging from the upper 60s to the lower 70s, with very muggy conditions. After morning thunderstorms, skies will clear out by Sunday afternoon. Highs will top out in the mid to upper 80s with humidity lowering throughout the day.
