non-potable ose water - water crisis uruguay drought

The president of the OSE, Raúl Montero, has expressed his concern about the forecast for the coming weeks in relation to the water supply in Uruguay. According to his words, “as the level drops, some problems may appear in terms of to be able to manage well the water that comes out of the valves”.

The water level in Severine Pass is the historical minimum and there is only a reserve for 18 days, leaving the metropolitan area of Montevideo and Canelones -the most populated area of the country- in a severe water crisis.

Montero has stated that the situation is “quite tough” and has explained that they are trying to extract less than 300,000 cubic meters from the 6,500,000 that are in the dam. Although at the moment they are in good condition, Montero has indicated that a complicated stage is expected at the end of May and beginning of June.

A dam that would have arrived late?

The Minister of Public Health, for her part, has stressed that a new increase in salinity in the water will depend on the measures taken by the OSE. In the event that the situation does not change, they have contemplated the option of maintaining a non-potable water supply to discharge cisterns and a potable water supply for more sensitive places.

The dam announced last week, according to the minister, will be to “better manage” the current waters and it is not final yet. However, he hopes that it will be ready next week and that it will allow a controlled level of this zone.

The situation in Uruguay remains uncertain in terms of water supply, and measures are expected to be taken to ensure access to the vital resource.
