IIn Hainburg, the Danube embankment is flooded and the side streets are therefore closed. In Petronell-Carnuntum, the recreation area with the playground and the dog zone are under water and road closures have been ordered here too.

The rain shows no signs of stopping and all fire departments in the region around Hainburg are in constant use. For days now, flooded cellars in many communities have had to be pumped out, and now the region is preparing for the Danube water level to reach its highest point on Monday evening.

According to its own reports, the Bad Deutsch-Altenburg fire department alone filled around 2,000 sandbags on Saturday and installed seals in particularly vulnerable areas.

Several streets have been closed in Hainburg and Petronell-Carnuntum. Since the Danube bank in the medieval town is already flooded, driving is prohibited in the adjacent side streets. The affected streets are Industriestrasse, Wilhelm-Schloss-Gasse, Dorrekstrasse, Baumgartnerweg and Nibelungenplatz. In order to provide a safe place for wild animals to retreat, Braunsbergstrasse and Thebnerstrasse are also closed to traffic.

In Petronell-Carnuntum, the recreation area is under water. “The ground is so soft that we had to close the roads to the playground, recreation area and dog park,” reports Mayor Martin Almstädter (SPÖ). The fire brigade had to pump out several cellars, including that of the elementary school. According to Almstädter, the municipality is constantly checking possible danger spots in the area. For example, a tree threatened to fall from private property onto the road and was felled.

According to a press release from the municipality, there are currently no critical areas in Berg; department heads and building yard employees are carrying out inspection trips in the town.
