MGTS has begun introducing an access control system into its cable ducts – its hatches will be equipped with wireless sensors that are triggered when opened. Alexey Merkutov, a representative of the controlling MGTS Mobile Telesystems (MTS), told Vedomosti about this. Pilot implementations of the system have proven its effectiveness, he says: “By increasing the speed of response of the company’s security service, the number of cable thefts has decreased by 42%, the number of vandalism, accompanied by damage to communication lines, by 27%.” The budget for the creation of the system is not disclosed at MTS. “In 2020 alone, 400 million rubles will be spent on its creation, and by 2023 more than 1 billion rubles may be spent on the protection of cable ducts,” says a source close to the company. According to him, it is planned to supply sensors for 50,000–75,000 hatches out of 150,000 available at MGTS. The scope of the project will be finalized this year, another source close to MTS said.

According to Merkutov, the use of the system will also prevent illegal cable laying in the MGTS sewage system, and the sensors can be used in other areas of the municipal economy: “For example, to detect uncovered wells or those on which the covers are not completely closed, this, in particular, will allow to reduce the number of pedestrian injuries and road accidents ”.
