This Thursday, September 21, Otis, Maeve, Eric and the others said goodbye to the subscribers of Netflix in bittersweet final episodes.
In July 2023, the creator of the series explained her decision not to continue the series which breaks taboos on adolescent sexuality beyond this fourth season in a message posted on Instagram: “It was not a decision easy to take”, wrote Laurie Nunn at the time. “But when the themes and storylines of this season crystallized, it became clear that it was time to leave high school.”
On the Netflix blog, Tudum, Laurie Nunn gave more details on this decision to end the series: “When writing season 4, it became very clear that our story was ending, that the characters were now in a state of mind where I was very happy to leave them. I was happy for them, and I felt like I was able to say everything I needed to say with these characters.” .
“We are extremely proud”
The decision to end “Sex Education” would therefore not come from Netflix nor from the audiences of the series, according to this message, but from a well-considered scriptwriting decision. “We are extremely proud of ‘Sex Education’ and we owe everything to our brilliant writers, cast and crew, who put so much heart into making each and every episode.”
Although “Sex Education” is finished, the creative team has other plans. Laurie Nunn is reportedly working on a new project in development, “The Summer House,” IMDB tells us. As for Ncuti Gatwa (Eric), he will soon be the fifteenth Doctor in the British series “Doctor Who”. Emma Mackey (Maeve) also has a film in production, “Hot Milk”, with Vicky Krieps, while Asa Butterfield (Otis) is due to appear in four new projects soon.
