The bishops of the Spanish dioceses have reiterated their requests for forgiveness for cases of sexual abuse in a letter addressed to the People of God entitled Sent to welcome, heal and rebuildin which they also warn that “in this important issue, focusing solely on the Church is blurring the problem.”
The prelates recall that “the vast majority of abusers are family members or people close to the victim” and that it is a scourge that affects “all sectors of society.” Consequently, “the recommendations and measures to be taken should not only be directed at us, but at all of society,” they explain.
In his opinion, “the way to heal this scourge in the Church and in society is for us to work together to build fair, safe and compassionate environments, where each person is loved, valued and respected.”
