A series of incidents marred recent races at Sha Tin, resulting in a suspension for jockey Hugh Bowman and scrutiny of several rides, according to an official report released today. the report details bumping, crowding, and interference affecting multiple horses and jockeys during the event.
Multiple Horses Affected by Early Race Contact
Several horses experienced difficulties from the start. Motor (K165), ridden by K C Leung, “bumped on jumping and became unbalanced,” the report states. Similarly,Gorgeous Victory (L087) and Mazing Grace (K166) also suffered early setbacks, with the latter making contact with the starting gate. Gorgeous Victory continued to experience issues,”raced wide and without cover for the majority of the event” after being bumped near the 550-meter mark.
Bowman Suspended for Careless Riding
The most significant outcome of the day was the suspension of jockey Hugh Bowman following an incident involving Turin Champions (L024) and Super Dragon (K389). Bowman pleaded guilty to a careless riding charge after allowing Turin Champions to shift in, causing interference with Super Dragon approaching the 200-meter mark.
“H Bowman was suspended from riding in races for one Hong Kong raceday to be conducted on Sunday, 18 January 2026 at Sha Tin,” the report confirms. Stewards assessed the carelessness as grade 2, considering both the consequences and Bowman’s otherwise strong riding record. Prior to the incident, Bowman had also been reprimanded for allowing Turin champions to drift in near the 750-meter mark, crowding super Dragon.
Further Incidents and Rider Reprimands
Beyond the Bowman case, other riders faced scrutiny. Z Purton, riding Super Dragon, was “advised to exercise more care” after his mount was checked due to the interference caused by Turin Champions. Additionally, Brett Avdulla, aboard Crossborderdude, received a reprimand for causing another horse, Blasted Talent (L091), to be steadied.
Blasted Talent was forced to avoid Crossborderdude, which had shifted in before being corrected by its rider. The report also noted that Jolly Brilliant (K498) was “held up for clear running” between the 400 and 250-meter marks, impacting its ability to finish strongly.
Post-Race Checks and Sampling
Several horses were selected for post-race sampling, including Salon S (K585) and Turin Champions. Veterinary inspections following the race did not reveal any significant findings for Motor, Forever Fancy (K354), or others examined. However, the report indicates that Motor‘s rider,K C Leung, believed the horse “did not run out the 1400 Metres of today’s race” under a top weight of 135 lbs.
