The new political situation in Pakistan. Opposition leader Shahbaz Sharif is set to become the next prime minister after Imran Khan was ousted in a no-confidence motion. Sharif is the most popular candidate in the opposition. As the Chief Minister of Punjab, he is well known to the people of Pakistan. He is the younger brother of three – time Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif. Sharif also led the opposition movement to overthrow the Imran Khan government. Shahbaz Sharif has good relations with the Pakistani military, which controls the country’s foreign and defense policies. He has also been the Chief Minister of Pakistan’s Punjab province.
Shahbaz Sharif was born into a business family in Lahore. After education he took over the family business. He later became active in politics in the province of Punjab. He was elected to the Punjab Provincial Assembly in 1988 and to the National Assembly in 1990. He was sworn in as the Chief Minister of Punjab in 1997. Shahbaz is the longest serving Chief Minister of Punjab. In 1997, Shahbaz Sharif became the first Chief Minister of Punjab. Shahbaz was popular for his development in the Punjab province.
But he was imprisoned in 2000 after a military coup led by Pervez Musharraf. Sharif then spent the next eight years in Saudi Arabia. He returned to Pakistan in 2007. In 2013, he returned to power as the Chief Minister of Punjab. Following the disqualification of his brother Nawaz Sharif, he was elected President of the Pakistan Muslim League-N. He has been a member of the National Assembly since 2018. In 2017, the Supreme Court disqualified former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif following the Panama Papers controversy. This was followed by Shahbaz, a brother and billionaire businessman, as the leader of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz faction. In 2019, the National Accountability Bureau froze Shahbaz’s assets in a money laundering case while he was the Leader of the Opposition. Shahbaz, who was jailed after the Lahore High Court convicted him, has been released on bail.
He was able to shock everyone in the Punjab province and prove the path of development. But like Nawaz Sharif, he has faced a number of corruption allegations. In 2019, the National Accountability Bureau arrested Shahbaz and his son Hamza Sharif in a money laundering case and froze their assets. It was a great achievement that after his release on bail he further strengthened the party and reached a consensus among the opposition parties. Today, Shahbaz Sharif is one of the main voices of the Pakistani opposition. Shahbaz now controls a crucial 84 seats in the Pakistan National Assembly. Shahbaz’s Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz is the most influential opposition party in Pakistan today. That is the main reason why his name was nominated for the PM’s job.
Despite being the Chief Minister of Punjab for three terms, Shahbaz’s performance is considered to be better than that of the Chief Ministers of the other three provinces. The fact that the Pakistani military is not unpopular up to this point is also a positive factor for Shahbaz. Moreover, Shehbaz Sharif has warm relations with foreign countries, especially China and Turkey.
