Babar Azam stepped down from the captaincy due to the failure in the ODI World Cup held in India. Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) gave Shaheen Afridi the responsibility of ODIs and T20Is due to Babar’s departure. However, after one series failed, they approached Babar again. Zaka Ashraf, the former chairman of PCB, thinks that the matter has been rushed.
Zaka Ashraf attended an Iftar party in Lahore on Saturday. There, while talking to reporters criticizing the decision to remove Shaheen Afridi, Zaka said, ‘Shaheen should have been given some more time, at least a year, so that his performance can be analyzed before taking any decision on the matter.’
Babar stepped down from the captaincy during Zaka Ashraf’s tenure. It was known then that there was pressure from the board as well. Explaining the matter, Xhaka further said, ‘We wanted to remove Babar as captain because we saw that he is under pressure as a captain. That’s why we have made Shaheen the captain so that he (Babar) can fully concentrate on batting.’
The former PCB chief said that he wanted to keep Babar in one format and said, ‘We wanted to keep Babar as Test captain but it was his own decision to give up the captaincy of all formats. Now that PCB has brought him back again, I wish him all the best.’
