Interior Minister Ayelet Shaked issued a dramatic announcement today when she announced her intention to shorten the winter time by about three weeks.
“Shortening the winter clock will save costs for the economy and will not hurt the student body and the worshiping public,” Shaked said on Channel 12’s “Meet the Press” program.
The proposal to shorten the winter clock will be submitted to the Knesset for approval in the coming month.
Not the first proposal for reform
As you may recall, about a month ago, Meretz submitted a bill to abolish the winter clock completely starting in 2022.
“The essence of the bill is to put Israel in line with many countries that have decided to abolish winter time in order to increase energy and electricity savings, reduce road accidents, illuminate roads, streets and an entire country,” the proposal said at the time. “In most Asian, African and South American countries there is no transition between winter time and summer for many years. There is no reason to darken a sunny country like Israel.”
