A musical chameleon, Shakira dazzled on stage at the 2023 MTV Video Music Awards on Tuesday (September 12), as she gave an electrifying performance before accepting the Video Vanguard Award, one of the night’s top honors.

Beginning her powerful medley with “She Wolf,” the Colombian superstar appeared inside a sort of cube, shifting between trance-like yoga poses before transitioning from robotic to fluid movement.

In a bright nude-colored outfit, she then sang part of the electro-pop song “Te felicito”, her 2022 hit with Rauw Alejandro, accompanied by four dancers, followed by “TQG”, her hit with Karol G dedicated to her exes, in means of pyrotechnics and six women joining her.

In perhaps one of the most memorable segments of his medley, he recreated his famous 2006 VMAs performance with “Objection (Tango).” Accompanied by a tribal-style percussionist forming a drum circle, Shakira truly demonstrated her magnetic star power and proceeded to grab an electric guitar to show off her skills on the instrument.

Belly dancing took center stage when it was time to sing “Wherever, Whenever” in front of what looked like a gigantic eclipse on the screen behind her, while a group of dancers performed intricate movements.

He brought the crowd to its feet, singing “Hips Don’t Lie” in Spanish; Tailor Swift was even seen doing some Latin-style dance moves. Shakira closed with one of the biggest songs of the year so far, “Bzrp Music Sessions, Vol. 53.” Then the crowd roared in Spanish: “Women no longer cry, women bill!”

Being the rock star that she is, Shakira even crowd surfed, and received a Colombian hat in the process. It was the first time she had taken the VMAs stage since 2006.

Minutes later, she made history as the first South American artist honored with the Video Vanguard Award, which she received amid deafening screams from the public. She is the second Latina artist to receive the honor, following Jennifer Lopez in 2018.
