Mohammed Shami has been dropped from the T20I series between India and Australia. Veteran fast bowler Shami has been ruled out of the three T20I series against Australia after suffering from the Covid-19 infection. Due to this, he did not join the Indian team for the first T20 on September 20 in Mohali. The information reached the concerned officials in the BCCI and team management when the Indian team reached Mohali on Saturday (September 17). The Australian team has also come to India for training.
Umesh Yadav is now expected to be nominated as a replacement for Shami. Umesh recently returned from a county match against Middlesex and was sidelined with a quad muscle injury. Umesh, who had arrived in India for an assessment with the BCCI’s medical team, was told that he was not fit enough for the four-day game and thus would not play in the county championship.

After Mohali, the second match will be played in Nagpur on September 23, followed by the third match in Hyderabad on September 25. Shami’s participation in the three-match T20 series against South Africa is also said to depend on his recovery from the Covid infection. The three T20Is against South Africa will be played on September 28, October 2 and October 4 in Thiruvananthapuram, Guwahati and Indore respectively.
Having been selected for T20s after nearly a year, Kovid is a setback for Shami. He last played for India in the 2021 T20 WC in UAE. A good performance in the double series against Australia and South Africa will give him a chance to make the World Cup squad in case of injuries to the four pacers Jasprit Bumrah, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Arshdeep Singh and Harshal Patel.
