Surfactant affects sebum secretion… Avoid ‘comedogenic’ ingredients in cosmetics
When washing your face, do not rub your skin for too long, and do not use excessive cream or essence.

As the weather gets warmer, spring outings are in full swing. However, some people are reluctant to go outside because of acne on their faces. Acne is a disease that causes inflammation of the sebaceous glands attached to hair follicles, and it often occurs not only in teenagers but also in adults in their 20s and 30s. If acne is left untreated, inflammation can become worse, and if the sebum bursts from the inside when squeezed incorrectly, the skin may become bumpy, pigmentation, and scarring may occur. How can I prevent acne? We met with Hwang Eun-joo, director of The Samjeomyoung Dermatology Clinic and a member of the Korean Acne Rosacea Association, to learn more about the misunderstandings and truths about acne that we didn’t know much about.

―Are hormonal changes the cause of acne?

“no. In general, many people give up on treatment, thinking that acne is caused by internal factors such as genetics or hormones. However, acne is not caused by a single cause, but by multiple factors. Factors that cause acne can be broadly divided into internal and external factors. Internal factors include increased dead skin cells and sebum, inflammation, and clogged pores, while external factors include incorrect cleansing, skin care habits, and hormonal problems.”

―Could it be caused by cosmetics?

“Yes. Cosmetics use various additives to produce specific effects or to allow various ingredients to mix well. During this process, it may contain ingredients that are not suitable for your skin. Additionally, strong sterilizing ingredients used in hand sanitizers or fragrances and aroma oils used in perfumes can also cause acne. When washing your hands, it is better to use soap rather than hand sanitizer, and when spraying perfume, it is recommended that you spray it without touching the skin. When choosing cosmetics, you should consider whether the product can balance oil and moisture without degenerating sebum. It is also a good idea to check whether ‘comedogenic’ ingredients, which are known to cause acne, are used. “You will be able to create your own answer note by selecting ingredients that do not suit your skin type.”

―Is it unrelated to shampoo and cleanser?

“no. Hair products such as shampoo and cleansers can also cause acne. I can’t say that both oils and surfactants are bad, but they have a big impact on sebum changes and can cause acne, so they should be used with caution. If oil ingredients used in hair essence come into contact with the skin, or surfactants from shampoos, rinses, treatments, etc. come into contact with the face or body, acne may occur or the condition may worsen. When washing and rinsing your hair with shampoo, it is best to completely tilt your body to avoid touching the skin and use a moderate amount. “Foam cleansers and oil cleansers can not only denature sebum but also damage the skin barrier, so we recommend using them with caution.”

―What is an effective acne prevention method?

“Acne development can be likened to the process of starting from a seed to becoming a flower.” First of all, you need to prevent millet sebum (acne seeds) from forming, and if it does, you need to manage it well to prevent it from getting worse. I would like to give three major pieces of advice as effective acne prevention methods.

First, it is best to change your lifestyle habits to prevent sebum from hardening. Rubbing the skin agitates the pores, which increases the size of the pores and causes irritation to the skin. Additionally, sebum hardening due to surfactants can also cause acne, so when washing your face, it is best not to rub your skin vigorously with a foam cleanser for a long time. It is helpful to be careful when brushing your teeth to avoid getting toothpaste foam on the corners of your mouth or chin.

Second, chemical irritation should be reduced to avoid disturbing the sebum system. If you frequently use cream or essence because your skin is dry, the chemical ingredients may react with the skin, causing the sebum to become sticky and lead to inflammation. Use mildly acidic, water-soluble cosmetics that do not change the properties of sebum, and be careful not to touch your face when using hand cream.

Third, if millet sebum has already formed, it must be removed in the right way. If you must squeeze it out, be careful not to leave scars or marks on your skin. Squeezing out sebum directly can cause infection, pigmentation, etc., and damage pore openings or sebaceous glands. If possible, we recommend visiting a dermatologist to get it checked out. “If this is not possible, it is not a bad idea to use a sebum removal patch.”
