Egyptian Actress Shams Al-Baroudi Accuses Colleague of Falsehoods in Hijab Offer Dispute
A retired Egyptian actress, Shams Al-Baroudi, publicly criticized a fellow artist, accusing her of dishonesty regarding a reported offer of one million Egyptian pounds to adopt the hijab. The dispute, unfolding on social media, highlights ongoing conversations surrounding personal choice, religious expression, and truthfulness within the Egyptian entertainment industry.
Al-Baroudi, in a post on her official Facebook account, directly addressed the unnamed artist, asserting that fabricating stories is unbecoming at her age and experience level. “Lying is not appropriate for the age and stage of life that she has reached,” Al-Baroudi stated, emphasizing the importance of honesty and avoiding false accusations. She further invoked Islamic teachings, citing the Prophet Muhammad’s (peace be upon him) rejection of falsehood, recalling his response when asked if a believer could lie: “No.”
The controversy stems from the artist’s claim of declining a substantial financial offer to wear the hijab. Al-Baroudi clarified that such offers – both for and against covering one’s head – are not uncommon, suggesting they often originate from individuals with “hearts sick,” but stressed she responded to the situation without anger, reaffirming her faith in God and His Messenger.
Al-Baroudi also expressed pride in her past work, stating she harbors no shame for roles undertaken in her youth with prominent directors and producers. However, she voiced concern over a trend of female artists embracing overly sexualized roles, lamenting that “only a few continue to be honest and avoid lying.”
The veteran actress concluded her statement with a call for repentance, asserting that “repentance from lying is obligatory” and that a true believer remains truthful regardless of temptation. She urged fellow artists to abandon dishonesty and embrace integrity.
This public rebuke follows a recent personal ordeal for Al-Baroudi, who previously announced her survival of a serious traffic accident. While attending to personal matters, she was reportedly struck by a vehicle that lost control, mounted the sidewalk, and overturned multiple times.
The incident underscores the complex interplay between faith, public image, and personal integrity within the Egyptian entertainment landscape. Al-Baroudi’s strong stance against perceived falsehoods has ignited debate and prompted reflection on the ethical responsibilities of public figures.
