Thiruvananthapuram: A war of words between Muslim League MLAs and CPM MLA A.N.Shamsir in the Legislative Assembly over interest. The war of words followed the question of whether it was right for the league leaders to be the heads of the interest-buying body. This was during the discussions related to the Kerala Cooperative Sangam Amendment Bill.
‘Usury is against Islam. Islam says that both the person who takes usury and the person who pays it are guilty. Is it right for Muslim League leaders to sit as the heads of an interest-paying institution’, League MLA U.A. Shamseer asked, interrupting Latif’s speech.
UA asked if that applies to Shamseer. Latif’s counter question. Later, PK Basheer also came in support of Latif. Aren’t you saying that if you want to become a Muslim, you have to get a certificate from the league office? Shamseer responded to this by saying that this is his question.
Meanwhile, the Second Cooperation Amendment Bill introduced by VN Vasavan was passed in the House. The Minister informed the House that the draft of the Cooperative Act, which aims at the core reform of the cooperative sector, is ready. By presenting and discussing the comprehensive amendment in the next conference, it is possible to move forward by making the flawless functioning of the cooperative sector in Kerala possible through a radical change. The minister said that we need to move forward together in this regard.
