The municipal health authority and several major hospitals in Shanghai have denied recent rumors that local hospitals were transmitting monkeypox through airborne transmission. Officials called for calm, saying most cases are mild or moderate and resolve on their own without medical intervention.

A chat transcript claiming that monkeypox was being transmitted in local hospitals was uploaded to the Shanghai rumor debunking platform by an anonymous netizen on Tuesday. It claimed that some hospitals affiliated with Fudan University have already taken preventive measures against the disease.

The platform then contacted the Shanghai Municipal Health Department, which strongly denied that any cases of monkeypox had been reported in Shanghai in the past few days.

Zhongshan Hospital, a Shanghai A-level hospital affiliated with Fudan University, also said it had not treated any cases of monkeypox recently. The medical staff of the fever clinic wear N95 masks and protective suits as a preventive measure. These measures have been in place since the start of the Covid pandemic in 2020 and were not introduced recently.

Huashan Hospital reported the chats could be a rumor as they found no case of the virus being transmitted in the hospital. Medical staff there added that common symptoms of monkeypox include fever and a rash and that there is no reason to be overly concerned.

On May 11 of this year, the World Health Organization declared that the monkeypox outbreak no longer constituted an “international public health emergency”.

Li Dongzeng, chief physician of the infectious diseases department at Beijing You’an Hospital, pointed out that most cases of monkeypox are mild or moderate and the body can fight it off on its own. The focus of the measures is currently on the implementation of isolation measures and symptomatic treatment.

Some medical professionals have also pointed out that the monkeypox virus enters the human body primarily through broken skin and mucous membranes. Since normal people have little opportunity to contract the virus, there is no reason to be overly concerned.
