Shanghai to Transition Entire Bus and Taxi Fleet to NEVs by 2027
August 11, 2024 – Shanghai authorities have announced a comprehensive plan to upgrade the city’s municipal bus and taxi fleet with new energy-powered passenger vehicles (NEVs) by the end of 2027. This ambitious initiative aims to reduce air pollution and transition towards sustainable transportation.
The definition of “new energy sources” encompasses all electric vehicles, including battery-powered electric vehicles (BEVs) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs), according to experts. The plan outlines a gradual replacement of approximately 9% of both buses and taxis annually over the next five years.
By the end of 2027, an estimated 6,200 buses and 11,000 taxis powered by new energy sources are expected to be operational in Shanghai. This shift towards NEVs aligns with the city’s commitment to cleaner transportation and environmental sustainability.
Furthermore, authorities are also exploring the potential of hydrogen fuel cell buses in the future.
